Healing, one teaspoon at a time Liečenie, jedna čajová lyžica po druhé

My name is Suzanne Dendy. After the loss of my family’s home in the Marshall wildfire and the diagnosis of our newborn with a life-threatening heart defect at just three weeks old, I found myself paralyzed by anxiety and indecision. I didn’t know how to move forward. When multiple attempts at self-help failed, I found an unexpected form of therapy in the kitchen.

My expedition into the baking unknown began with a collection of Slovak recipes from my husband’s family, gifted to me on our wedding day six years before. Shortly after our home, belongings and that recipe book were destroyed in the Colorado Marshall Fire, a package arrived from Slovakia: a new recipe book. Once our family had settled into some sort of normal (not completely normal: we must temper expectations with three small children), I began to flip through the recipe book once more. I had sense that these recipes I saw were permanent: unlike all of the possession that I had lost, these could not ever be taken away from me—and what’s more, they could be passed on.
